The Maine State town of Union, with a population of barely 2,300, is located in Knox County and is the home of the Union Fair. Union can date its history back to 1629, although in those early days it was not called Union. In 1772 the first white settlers began arriving, notably Dr John Taylor, who settled on 19th July 1774, after whom the town is named. The Fair has included harness racing in August since 1902 on its 4 furlong oval track complete with open air grandstand. The principal race at the meeting is the Maine Sire Stakes.
